Your Cadillac transmission focuses the power produced by your engine and channels it to your wheels. The transmission ensures that your wheels receive the appropriate amount of power needed for a given speed. A transmission contains hundreds of parts, and these parts can wear out. As your Cadillac dealer, we like to tell you about some of the signs you need to see us for a transmission repair.

Noises in Neutral

Transmission problems can sometimes be difficult to detect. A transmission problem can also seem to be coming from somewhere else in your car. If you think you have a transmission problem, you can test it by shifting your Cadillac’s transmission into neutral and listening. If your transmission is operating correctly, you won’t hear any sound at all.

When your transmission is in neutral, the gears aren’t engaged. If you hear any sound, it’s important to call our service department ASAP. Our technicians will check it for you. In most cases, the noise means that you either need more transmission fluid, or the fluid is old and needs to be changed. It can also mean you have a mechanical problem, like a worn reverse idler gear or damaged gear teeth.

Slow or No Shifting

Your Cadillac transmission shifts smoothly and silently according to the demands of your transmission computer. Over time, you may notice a slight delay between when the shift should occur and when the shift happens. This problem starts slowly, but the delay will grow longer and more pronounced over time. Our technicians will check your transmission and find the cause of the problem.

A more disturbing problem is your transmission’s refusal to shift gears at all. Without a working transmission, your Cadillac won’t move. There are many reasons why this problem can happen, but one of the most common is a lack of transmission fluid. Transmission fluid provides the hydraulic power that allows your gears to shift. If you lack transmission fluid, we’ll also need to find and fix the cause of the fluid leak.

Transmission Fluid Leak

As we’ve seen, transmission fluid provides the power your gears need to move. This fluid also lubricates all the transmission parts and helps to control the temperature in the transmission. The fluid circulates through the transmission and collects dirt, metal shavings, and other debris. The debris is then removed by the transmission filter as the fluid passes through it.

A transmission leak is usually easy to spot, as transmission fluid is bright or dark red and has a sweet smell. Sometimes, you may find a leak of black liquid with a burnt smell which is an additional problem. The black fluid is a transmission fluid that hasn’t been changed and has started to burn in the transmission. We would need to flush your transmission before we fill it with new fluid.

Transmission problems are usually easy and inexpensive to fix if they’re attended to as soon as they start. Call us right away at Airport Cadillac.
